Politics of Basic Income Talk Series – Bru Laín & Aida Martinez on December 21, 2023: “What’s Happening in Catalunya?”

Bru Laín (Associate Professor, University of Barcelona) & Aida Martinez (Data Analyst, Opinion Studies Center in Catalonia) are the third guests in the Politics of Basic Income Talk Series!

Title: What’s Happening in Catalunya?

Abstract: Bru Laín and Aida Martinez will be talking us through the contemporary and highly charged politics of basic income in Catalunya. Having previously agreed to fund one of the most ambitious UBI pilots in history, earlier this year political authorities rolled back on that commitment, and the pilot is presently suspended. Bru and Aida will talk us through the politics and prospects.

Bios

Bru Laín is a PhD in Sociology and associate professor at the University of Barcelona. He was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Dept. of Public Law (University of Girona, Spain), the CEPS (University of Minho, Portugal), and the Barcelona Institute of Regional and Metropolitan Studies. He was also a doctoral researcher at the Karl Polanyi Institute of Political Economy (Concordia University Montreal), the CAPPE (University of Brighton), and a post-doc at the Chair Hoover d’éthique économique et sociale (UCL). He has taught at the Universidad Nacional de Ecuador, the University of Leeds, the Elisava – Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and McGill University. He is a member of the Basic Income Earth Network and the Spanish Basic Income Network. Has worked at the Barcelona UBI experiment (B-MINCOME) as well as at the Catalan UBI Pilot. He works on the intersection of political philosophy, property rights, and basic income.

Aida Martinez Tinaut obtained a joint bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M), Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM)). She got her master’s degree in Political Analysis and Institutional Consulting from the University of Barcelona (UB), and also obtained a postgraduate degree in Data Analysis for political analysis and public management (UB). She has worked in the public and private spheres in the assessment of public policies, the processing and analysis of data and the preparation of analysis reports based on quantitative and qualitative methods. She worked as a data analyst at the Office of the Pilot project to implement the Universal Basic Income at the Catalan government and currently works as a data analyst at the Opinion Studies Center in Catalonia.

Starting in October 2023 and continuing monthly on every 3rd Thursday, join us for a global exploration of Universal Basic Income (UBI) politics, hosted by the Bath UBI Beacon and Freiburg Institute of Basic Income Studies (FRIBIS), in partnership with the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). Experts from around the world will share insights on UBI policy, movement building, and research.
